~ Fun Facts! ~

Because of her amazing compassion and love she expressed towards soldiers, Clara was nicknamed “The Angel of the Battlefield”. She was the first of women to be the head a United States bureau, and the highest women in the government several times. Clara was awarded the Iron Cross of Merit by the German emperor, William I, in 1873. Her voice gave out in 1808, which is why she stopped giving lectures. She was not completely mute but her voice was mostly ruined. When she led the missing person’s office, she alone identified an estimated twenty thousand dead and missing soldiers. Her last house in Glen Echo that she died at was declared a national historic site, the first ever dedicated to the accomplishments of a woman. She never married nor had children.
